Part of Van Dyke Freeway (M-53) will close for three months starting Monday morning in Macomb County.

Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, March 4, southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) will be closed from 18 Mile Road to Hall Road (M-59) for approximately three months. Crews will be carrying out road and bridge work during that time.

The eastbound and westbound M-59 ramps to southbound M-53 will also be closed.

Southbound M-53 traffic will be detoured via westbound M-59 to southbound Mound Road, then eastbound 18 Mile Road to southbound M-53.

There will also be local road closures for bridge work on M-53 at the following intersections:

  • Utica Road.
  • 19 Mile Road.
  • Canal Road.

This work is part of a $16 million project on M-53 between 18 Mile Road and M-59 to resurface the roadway, perform concrete and guardrail repairs, repair 10 bridges, and resurface the 23 Mile Road ramps to M-53. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 227 jobs.
