Group hopes to rename Detroit road to Stevie Wonder Boulevard

Campaign to honor Stevie Wonder gains momentum

DETROIT – The Stevie Wonder Tribute Committee and Urban Solutions Training and Development are asking the community to attend a public hearing Thursday in regard to renaming a Detroit road to Stevie Wonder Boulevard.

Stevie Wonder, one of Motown's first recording artists, will make his final stop on his United States tour at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday.

Milwaukee Avenue, which is what the road is currently named, is near the Amtrak station, and is the preferred location to be renamed, said Sharon DuMas, chair of the Stevie Wonder Tribute Committee and founder of Urban Solutions Training and Development.

"We think it's a fitting time to honor Stevie with a visible landmark between the heart of the city and the business and entertainment districts closer to downtown," said DuMas. "With the repopulation of the city, and with the passing of so many years since the Motown era, we don't want anyone forgetting how important people like Stevie have been to Detroit's history."

The public hearing will be held Thursday on the 13th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building, 2 Woodward Ave., at 11 a.m.

The committee said they hope to persuade City Council to unveil the renamed road in May 2016, when Wonder will celebrate his 66th birthday.
