'Shoes for Soles in Need' hands out nearly 1,000 pairs

DETROIT – The walkways of Milliken State Park in Detroit were lined with hundreds of shoes for "The Million Shoe March – Shoes for Soles in Need."

The Queens of Purposeful Youth collected donations and offered free, gently used shoes for those in need Saturday morning.

"We are changing lives. Changing lives one step at a time," said Nikkia Matthews. "Give them hope and inspire them before they leave here today."

From dress shoes to children's tennis shoes, local families were able to walk the rows and find pairs for their feet.

"It helps people," said Chemya James. "See everybody that needs help and can come get help and takes stress off of people's shoulders."

The event was able to give out nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes to families in need.
