The location at 4240 Cass, next to Go Sy Thai, is currently occupied by The Auburn apartments, but the lobby is being converted into a storefront.

"We're pretty excited about it, and it is our first retail stand alone store.  We had that pop up store just across Cass last summer and had lots of fun, so we decided it's time for our own place, our own rules, hours, etc," said Dave Tuzinowksi of Detroit Surf Co.

Detroit Surf sells longboards, mini cruisers, skateboards, snowboards and surfboards.

They also have a beer collaboration with Jolly Pumpkin, called Detroit Surf Co. Pale Ale.

They are hoping to open up in June.

Here's some background on their story from the website:

Detroit Surf Co. started with just one t-Shirt in Maui Hawaii in winter (2005-06) and Detroit in the summer to show pride in being from the Motor City.

In Hawaii that winter, everyone asked where I got my shirt from, and where they could BUY one. After hearing this a thousand times, I thought... Hummmm, why am I not selling these? . I trademarked my ideas, and started carrying around a backpack full of shirts with the original classic Detroit Surf Co. logo, and shortly after Detroit Surfboards, Detroit Surf Wear, Surf Detroit logos. I'd sell out every time we went out wearing a shirt, people from all around the country, and world wanted shirts. The backpack full of shirts went to a trunk full of shirts, to van full of stuff, to a house full of more stuff to selling online all around the world.

Today we make Detroit Surf Co. brand Surfboards, Stand Up Paddle Boards right here in DETROIT MICHIGAN with all 100% USA made materials. We're also in production of Snowboards under the brand name Detroit Snowboards, also made 100% in Michigan.
