Justin Verlander officially ruled out for Tuesday start

DETROIT – Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Justin Verlander will not return for his first start of the season Tuesday, manager Brad Ausmus said Friday.

Verlander's simulated game, which was supposed to last 60 pitches over four innings, was cut short Wednesday. The 31-year-old threw 45 pitches through three simulated innings at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Ausmus said Kyle Lobstein will make his second start of the season Tuesday in Verlander's place. Lobstein battled control issues in his first start of the season but managed to get through five innings and beat the Cleveland Indians. He allowed eight hits and two walks in the win.

It's unclear when Verlander will return to the mound for Detroit.
