DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced Wednesday that Justin Verlander has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The move is retroactive to March 29, two days after he left a spring training game with the triceps strain.

The team called up pitcher Kyle Lobstein from Triple-A Toledo to replace him on the roster.

This is the first time in Verlander's 10-year career that he has landed on the DL.

Verlander was supposed to pitch in a minor league game Tuesday, the final hurdle towards returning to MLB action. But he felt pain during a 40-pitch bullpen session Sunday, halting the process.

Now Detroit will need a replacement starter on Sunday, when it battles the Indians in Cleveland. It appears Lobstein will get the nod after pitching in seven games for the club last season.

Lobstein allowed 19 earned runs in 39.1 innings last year, striking out 27 and walking 14. He walked six batters and allowed four runs in 10 spring innings.
