Former MSU point guard Keith Appling charged after police say guns, marijuana found in car

Appling arrested Sunday, facing 3 different charges

DETROIT – Former Michigan State University point guard Keith Appling has been charged after police said they found two guns and marijuana in his car outside a Dearborn strip club.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday that Appling, 24, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, and possession of marijuana.

Appling was arrested Sunday at a club off Michigan Avenue. Police said officers went to the club after a security guard called them to report seeing Appling pull a gun from the trunk of his car. Police said they found a handgun, a small amount of suspected marijuana and another loaded gun in the trunk.

He was arraigned Wednesday and received a $5,000 personal bond. His next court hearing is Friday.

Appling is a Detroit native who played basketball for Pershing High School.

Appling played all four years at Michigan State University, earning All-Big Ten honors his junior year, averaging 13.4 points per game.

Appling went un-drafted in the 2014 NBA Draft. He currently plays for the Orlando Magic, in the NBA's Developmental league.

In March, another former MSU basketball player, Mateen Cleaves, was charged after allegedly holding a woman against her will in a motel and sexually assaulting her.
