Yzerman was the cornerstone of the Red Wings' rebirth. The team's captain for almost 20 years, he led the Wings to three Stanley Cups. Yzerman also scored 692 goals during his career. Only eight players scored more.

His long-time teammate, and successor as Wings' captain, Nick Lidstrom won four Stanley Cups with the Wings and an incredible seven Norris Trophies as the NHL's top defenseman. He was also the first European player to win the Conn Smythe Award as the Stanley Cup playoff MVP in 2002.

It can be maddening to be a sports fan in this town. And yet, over the last 35 years, the modern era of Detroit sports, we've witnessed championships and some of the greatest athletes in history.

The Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings were all champions, so were the Michigan and Michigan State basketball teams. Both schools also won multiple Rose Bowls and Michigan was the 1997 national champion.

The Lions, well, they've been the Lions. But Barry Sanders was a once-in-a-lifetime talent who could make even the dreariest 4-12 Wayne Fontes' season exciting.

So who was the best? We want you to help us pick the MVP of this modern era.

Our selection committee crunched the most detailed statistical analysis available to build brackets of the finest 66 athletes and coaches from 1980 to present. Larry Murphy and Tom Brady won the play-in matches to make the big bracket.

Now it's up to you to narrow the list to the one true modern-era MVP of Detroit sports.
