Mike Ilitch dies at age 87

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Detroit Pistons released a statement Friday night after the death of Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch.

"Mike Ilitch was a heroic figure who made enormous contributions to Detroit.  It was inspiring to speak with him, and to see firsthand his commitment to his family and to making a difference in the community. His impact will be felt for generations to come.  My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ilitch family."

Palace Sports and Entertainment also released a statement:

"We are so saddened to learn of the passing of Mike Ilitch.  Mr. Ilitch made a lasting impact in business, sports and the community.  His love and concern for Detroit set the stage for the remarkable revitalization story that is evolving each day.  We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Ilitch family, his friends and our colleagues at the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers."
