Disturbing details of Derrick Rose's gang rape case

In 2011, Derrick Rose was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player. Last year, Rose was the subject of a lawsuit for an alleged rape that took place in 2013.

Now, we're getting some disturbing details from the case, including court briefings, text messages, emails and depositions.

Think Progress' Lindsay Gibbs laid out the details of the case in a lengthy article on Thursday.

Rose is being sued by Jane Doe (name not released) for $21.5 million for an alleged gang rape, carried out by Rose and two friends.

The night of the alleged incident, Rose held a party at his home in California, and sent a driver to pick up Doe and her friend for the party.

The driver was late, and the two women began drinking while waiting for their ride. Doe drank wine on the way to Rose's -- and continued drinking at the party.

The two women went home, and after a text exchange, Rose showed up to Doe's apartment with two friends - where all men had sexual intercourse with her.

Although Rose's defense team has been working a strategy to depict Doe as "promiscuous," Rose's deposition and text transcripts reveal that he is the one with sexual deviances. Here's an except from the Gibbs report:

In particular, they focus on the fact that she “volunteered to bring a sex belt to have fun with Mr. Rose” on August 26. While it is true that Doe mentioned a sex belt, Rose said himself in the deposition that he told her to get the belt.

Q: You told her to get [the sex belt]? Is that what you said?
Rose: Yeah.
Q: Okay. And did she ask you to pay her money for buying it?
Rose: I kind of assumed myself that I was going to look out for her for her just getting it anyway, but I think it was — we both understood that I was going to give her something for the belt.

Furthermore, Rose revealed in his deposition that throughout the course of their relationship, he had pressured her to send him sexual videos, but she never did. At one point, he even bought Doe a MacBook specifically so that she could “masturbate on Skype.”

At one point, Rose admits that she never consented to group sex, even calling off the relationship with Doe because of her refusal.

In another exchange, Rose is alleged to have asked Doe to bring a friend for a threesome, that she was uncomfortable with.

There is evidence to suggest Doe was unconscious, or at least sleeping, when Rose and his friends came to her residence.

Doe claims that she “woke up fully dressed and wet with lubricant.” Her sheets were messed up; she had found some blood, and there was a used condom.

In July, a federal judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit. Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald said a jury must decide whether to believe Rose’s contention that the woman, a former lover, consented to group sex at her home in 2013.

In denying Rose’s request to toss out the lawsuit, the judge said Rose’s version of events “could well convince a reasonable jury,” but there was substantial disagreement over the facts and a jury also could conclude the opposite.

The case will go to trial in October.

Derrick Rose, 27, was traded to the New York Knicks in June.
