Lions introduce Rod Wood as team president

The Detroit Lions made two big moves over the last 24 hours, first hiring Rod Wood as team president and then announcing they were moving their radio broadcasts to WJR.

The later decision sparked controversy after their former radio station, 97.1 The Ticket, claimed the Lions had tried influence the station's sports-talk coverage.

Wood, the former head of Ford Estates, was introduced to the media today at a 3:15 p.m. news conference. He also addressed the claims that the Lions ditched 97.1 because station hosts were critical of the team.

"We do not agree with the comments out there about censorship," Wood said.

Wood acknowledged he's "not a football guy" but described himself as an accomplished businessman who knows how to attract top talent. His primary role, he said, will be to manage the Lions business operations.

Wood said the team's "next big step" is to hire a general manager who will be "responsible for the entire football side of the organization," including managing the salary cap.

"We're going to get the right person on the football side," he said.

Wood said coach Jim Caldwell's future will be determined in the offseason by a new general manager.

The Lions are currently 2-7. They are scheduled to play the Oakland Raiders Sunday afternoon at Ford Field.
