Former Tigers Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello win Cy Young awards; Justin Verlander finishes 2nd in AL

Verlander earns most 1st place votes in AL race

DETROIT – Look away, Detroit Tigers fans, the Cy Young Award winners might make you feel nauseated.

Former Tigers ace Max Scherzer was named the 2016 National League Cy Young winner, while longtime Detroit starter Rick Porcello took home AL honors. Both players have gone on to be elite starting pitchers for teams that played in the postseason this October.

Scherzer won 20 games for the Washington Nationals this season, posting a WHIP under 1.00 and a 6.2 WAR. He struck out 284 batters in 228.1 innings and even recorded a 20-strikeout game against the Tigers in a complete-game win May 11.

Porcello enjoyed the best season of his career in 2016, winning 22 games and posting a 1.01 WHIP and 5.0 WAR. He struck out 189 batters in 223 innings and tied a career high with three complete games.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander received 14 of 30 first-place votes in the race for the AL Cy Young Award, but finished second behind Porcello. Verlander received 132 points in the voting, while Porcello received 137. Verlander is the first pitcher to receive the most first-place votes in the Cy Young race and not win the award.

Verlander led the AL with 254 strikeouts, a 6.6 WAR and a 1.00 WHIP. He finished just 16-9 on the season, but held batters to a .207 average while striking out more than 10 batters per nine innings.
