The 28-year-old hit 26 home runs with the San Diego Padres in 2015. He batted .251 with a .336 on base percentage.

"I think what sold me mostly is Mr. Ilitch is a guy that wants to win ball games," Upton said. "He wants to win a championship."

"I knew two things about Detroit - they have a talented roster and a good fan base that packs the house & sits through bad weather."

Tigers general manager said Upton was their top offensive target.

"I said, 'Mr. Ilitch, I’m trying to tweak it.' He said, 'Well, I appreciate you trying to tweak it, but I want more than a tweak.'"
