Michigan basketball knocks off top-seeded Purdue to advance to Big Ten Tournament semifinals

Wolverines beat Purdue, 74-70, in overtime

WASHINGTON – The Michigan basketball team kept rolling through the Big Ten Tournament on Friday with an overtime win over No. 1 seed Purdue. The Wolverines have won on back-to-back days since their team plane slid off the runway Wednesday and forced them to make alternative travel plans.

Michigan advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, where it will play either Michigan State or Minnesota.

D.J. Wilson led Michigan with 26 points on 11 of 18 shooting. He also pulled down eight rebounds and made three blocks. His block on Carson Edwards' three-point attempt at the buzzer sent the game into overtime.

Zak Irvin was huge for Michigan down the stretch, making the game-tying layup with five seconds left in regulation and scoring twice in overtime to give Michigan its final lead. He finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in the game.

Derrick Walton Jr. had a quiet game, but still scored 12 points and added four assists and four rebounds. He was a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Purdue was led by a pair of bench players, as Isaac Haas and Carsen Edwards each scored 17 points. Caleb Swanigan led the Boilermakers starters with 13 points and 13 rebounds, but converted just five of 13 attempts from the floor.

Purdue shot just 6-13 from the free-throw line. The Wolverines were an impressive 18-23.
