Matthew Stafford expected to sign extension with Detroit Lions

DETROIT – Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford could sign a multi-year contract extension with the team as early as Tuesday, according to ESPN.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Stafford will get a three-year extension through 2017. The deal, according to multiple reports, is worth approximately $76.5 million over the next five seasons -- including the remaining two years on his rookie contract. Of that total, $43 million is guaranteed.

Stafford started 16 games for Detroit this past season, throwing 20 touchdowns and a total 4,967 yards. He threw for 5,093 yards the previous season.

He was Detroit's 1st pick, 1st overall in the 2009 NFL draft.
