DETROIT – Mother Nature is causing significant damage to the Pontiac Silverdome.
The former home of the Detroit Lions opened in 1975, but the team moved downtown in 2002.
The stadium is now owned by a Toronto-based business man who snatched the dome up a few years ago for a little more than $500,000. But since then it's been left to sit and rot.
Local 4 photojournalist Alex Atwell took a look inside the dome earlier this year. At that time there was still some protection from the elements, but now it's clear the glory days for the once grand stadium are over.
Just weeks ago, the final sections of the dome dropped to the field. The once iconic Silverdome has hosted a Super bowl, the pope, Wrestlemania, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and so many others.
Sadly, now it's getting attention for all the wrong reasons.
