Michael Phelps has achieved international fame for being the most decorated Olympian of all time. He has won a total of 22 medals, including 18 gold, and he is the world record holder in several swimming events. In addition to competing in Rio, he will be an American flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony.
Phelps was born in Baltimore, Maryland and competed in his first Olympics in 2000 at the age of 15. He trained at the University of Michigan from 2004-08 under coach Bob Bowman.
Phelps will compete in the 200m butterfly on Aug. 8, the 100m butterfly on Aug. 11, and the 200m individual medley on Aug. 10.
