Michigan's Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt named team captain

Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt has a new role heading into the Summer Games in Rio de Janiero, team captain.

USA Swimming took to Instagram and Twitter to make the announcement Tuesday afternoon.

Schmitt, who is competing in the women's 800m freestyle relay, is one of six members of the team to be made a team captain.    Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian, Anthony Ervin, Elizabeth Beisel and Cammile Adams were also named captains.

Captains for the U.S. Olympic swim team are based on votes from teammates, according to USA Swimming's social media post.

This is the third Olympic games for Schmitt. The Canton native returned from the London games in 2012 with five medals. Three were gold medals in the 200-meter freestyle race, the 4x200-meter medley relay and the 4x100-medley medley relay. She won a silver in the 400-meter freestyle and a bronze in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay.

She won a bronze in the women's 800m freestyle relay during the 2008 games in Beijing, China.

Michigan will be well represented in the pool in Michigan.

Connor Jaeger will compete in the men's 400 meter freestyle and 1500 meter freestyle races.  Jaeger is from New Jersey, but has spent the past six years training at the University of Michigan.  He completed his Masters in Management this past spring.   This will be a second Olympics for Jaeger who competed in the men's 1500 meter freestyle in 2012.

Another UM athlete is Sean Ryan who will be swimming the 10K open water event. He completed his Masters of Mechanical Engineering this spring

Phelps, who trained with Bob Bowman and Club Wolverine at the University of Michigan from 2004 to 2008 and served as the team’s volunteer coach, qualified for his fifth Olympics in the 200 meter butterfly, 200 meter IM and 100 meter butterfly. Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has won 18 gold medals, 22 Olympic medals overall.

Mike Bottom, the head swim coach at UM, is heading to Rio as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's Olympic swim team.
