Suspended Michigan football WR announces he'll transfer

DETROIT – Ahmir Mitchell came to Ann Arbor as one of the most highly regarded freshmen in Jim Harbaugh's 2016 recruiting class.

His Michigan career didn't last long.

Less than a year after signing his letter of intent to Michigan, Mitchell announced on Twitter that he will be "reopening (his) recruitment to all universities and football programs."

Mitchell's announcement came nine days after Harbaugh revealed at a news conference that two players had been suspended. The players turned out to be Mitchell and redshirt freshman defensive end Shelton Johnson. Harbaugh didn't reveal the reason for their suspension, saying, "We'll handle it internally."

He also said Mitchell was among three players who were invited to the team picture but didn't show up.

Mitchell was one of seven players to enroll early at Michigan during the offseason, joining the Wolverines for the winter semester. He was the 21st-rated wide receiver in the 2016 class, according to Scout.com, and the 131st overall player.

The Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, native also had scholarship offers from Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin and others.

Mitchell looked like he had a chance to make an impact for Michigan in 2016 after getting some looks in the spring game, but now he'll have to make that impact somewhere else.
