Metro Detroit weather: Hot, muggy Friday evening

Evening temps near 90, heat index 95

DETROITA HEAT ADVISORY is in effect for Detroit and all of Southeast Michigan until 10 p.m. ET, Friday.

An AIR QUALITY ALERT (aka, OZONE ACTION DAY) will be in effect for Detroit and all of Southeast Michigan Saturday.

Friday evening will be hot and muggy with temps near 90 degrees. Heat indices remain in the middle 90s. It is important to stay cool and healthy during this heat wave at all times. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes when going outdoors, drink plenty of water and stay in or near air conditioned areas.

Check on neighbors Friday night, especially those without air conditioning. Temps will be in the low 70s overnight under mostly clear skies and hazy conditions.

The stagnant air coupled with high heat and humidity will prompt an Air Quality Alert Day Saturday. Morning temps will be in the low to upper 70s. The mercury soars to the low and middle 90s in the afternoon. Detroiters need to cut down on air pollution by driving less and carpooling and using public transportation more often, taking a break from mowing the lawn after lunchtime and grilling after dusk.

Keep using "cool off tips" and making sure pets and children stay hydrated and far away from unattended vehicles. Just as important, everyone outdoors must take frequent water breaks to avoid heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke no matter how healthy they are. Finely tuned athletes can quickly get into a crisis if they do not stay cool and hydrated.

Saturday night will be mostly clear to partly cloudy and warm. Lows will be in the low 70s.

Clouds gather Sunday, and lower temps will be the result. It remains hotter than average with highs in the upper 80s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms develop Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front.

The cold front spells relief Monday through Wednesday. Temps will be closer to average; in the middle then upper 80s. Humidity drops, too.
