DETROIT – Just as we dig out from yesterday's big snow storm, another one is knocking on the door.
Weather-wise, we'll be dry the rest of today, tonight, and through most of the daylight hours of Saturday.
Then snow develops late Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening ahead of a cold front.
Normally, the front passes by, and takes the snow with it.
This time, however, an area of low pressure will develop in the Oklahoma / Arkansas region and travel right up the front into Ohio by Sunday afternoon.
As always, the exact track of the low determines how much snow we get.
The way I see things right now, we'll get a couple of inches of snow Saturday night from the cold front, then another 4 to 8 inches on Sunday.
Thus, storm total snowfall initially looks to be in the 6 to 10 inch range.
Wind will increase Sunday night, so blowing and drifting snow will then become a problem, followed by the coldest Arctic outbreak we've seen in many years.
Daytime highs will be down into the single numbers Monday through Wednesday, and if we fail to rise above zero on any of these days, it'll be the first time this has happened here in Detroit since January 19, 1994. Overnight lows Monday night and Tuesday night will fall well below zero. Wind chills by Tuesday could approach -30°, so we'll not only see an extended period with Wind Chill Advisories in effect, but possibly part of those days under a Wind Chill Warning.
