Super Typhoon Mercanti heads toward China

If you haven’t heard, yet another super typhoon (remember that a typhoon is just a hurricane called something else on the other side of the world) has developed in the west Pacific, and will skirt southern Taiwan this evening.

However, the eye of this exceptionally powerful storm is passing directly over some far northern Phillippine islands this afternoon, and I cannot even imagine the disaster that could be unfolding there right now.

At last report, Super Typhoon Mercanti had 185 mph continuous winds in its eyewall, with gusts approaching 225 mph.

The storm will continue past Taiwan on its way to an eventual landfall on the China coast, but as a much weaker typhoon.
