Here are 4 top things to know ahead of Lions playoff game in downtown Detroit

Legitimate parking lots will charge ridiculous amounts to park your car

DETROIT – If you are heading downtown this weekend for the Detroit Lions playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there are four top things you should know before heading into Ford Field.

Just know that even legitimate parking lots will charge ridiculous amounts to park your car. With all that said, know that street parking is an option if you arrive early enough on Sunday (Jan. 21).

“In the city of Detroit, you will never be charged cash to park on a public street,” said Detroit police Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes. “We have a detail to address that.”

If you’re using a lot, ensure it’s secure and well-lit, and don’t fall for being asked to show your insurance or give your keys to an attendant. You must steer clear of that nonsense.

Expect to see the Detroit Police Department in force as the department has a special event protocol it employs for big days and nights downtown that will be in effect.

Last Sunday, there was no drama. Just a really great time.

The police department intends to keep it that way, so don’t be surprised when you see a significant law enforcement presence in and around the central business district.

Something else to remember is that the Detroit Red Wings are also playing Tampa Bay on Sunday, and that game time has been moved because of the Lions playoff game to 7 p.m., all of which means the city will be hopping.

Hopes for the Lions are at an all-time high, and so are the decibels inside Ford Field, which broke a record last Sunday, meaning if you’re bringing a little one to Ford Field to experience the hoopla, Local 4′s Dr. Frank McGeorge has some advice.

“These sound levels are high enough that they can damage anyone’s hearing in seconds, especially young children,” said McGeorge. “Children’s ear canals are shorter, so they allow more sound in, and their ears are more sensitive.”

So bring earplugs or some sort of ear protection for yourself and for the little one as Ford Field will be rocking once again.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. inside Ford Field.
