Hire our Heroes Job Fair held at Ford Community and Arts Center in Dearborn

More than 100 businesses take part at Dearborn jobs fair

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair made its first stop in Metro Detroit on Wednesday.
It's a part of a program to help veterans find work after their military service and hundreds of servicemen and woman turned out for the event.
"There's a lot here for soldiers," said U.S. Army soldier Miran Peterson.
More than 100 businesses attended the job fair at the Ford Community and Arts Center in Dearborn.
"We've gotten about 10 applicants and of the 10, all 10 are really good," said Brian Brookes, a representative of Uncle Ed's Oil Shoppe. 'That's a great thing to have that many (qualified) people."
Ross Cohen of the US Chamber of Commerce said all the veterans need is a chance.
"They show up early. They stay late. They get things done under crazy circumstances, but those skills don't always translate to a civilian resume as naturally as it should," Cohen said. "Events like this help to bridge that gap
and put talented people face to face with potential employers."
John Woolston, a Navy Senior Chief, has retired from the military and is moving to Michigan. He is hoping his Navy skills will translate into a good job in civilian life.
"The ribbons I wear are like a resume on my shirt," said Woolston, who attended the job fair in full uniform. "My entire adult life has been in the Navy. To get out after 22 years is kind of overwhelming so an event like this eases the transition."
The Dearborn Police Department was among the employers hoping to hire.
"It's something that we'd like to do to give back to our veterans who served our country," said Cpl. Jerry Blevins of the Dearborn Police Department.
There were also several kiosk set up at the job fair where veterans could get additional information about job openings.
