Baby seat safety improving

There's encouraging news tonight about child car seats. In this case, it's about some of the flame retardant chemicals found in many models. The Ecology Center in Ann Arbor says the manufacturer Britax has confirmed it will make chemical free car seats by the end of 2012.

Last August, the center sounded the alarm about chemicals like bromine, chlorine, cadmium, and other metals. Usually, those chemicals were used in flame retardants or in the colors on the seat.

One of the Britax models was on the list of the worst seats when it came to chemicals. The Ecology Center had been talking with the company for weeks, and Thursday Britax confirmed its seats would be chemical free by the end of the year.

Britax is the fourth largest maker of car seats, so this policy change is expected to set a precedent for other companies making baby products.

Jeff Gearhart of the Ecology Center calls this a victory for consumers.
