Most American cats and dogs are overweight

Owners of fat animals believe their pets look normal

Most cats and dogs in the U.S. are overweight, according to figures released by the Association of Pet Obesity and Prevention cited by ABC News Radio.

Some 58 percent of cats -- and 53 percent of dogs -- are overweight, according to the APOP.

According to the ABC News post, perception is the core of the problem: Between 90 and 95 percent of owners of fat cats or dogs believe their pets appear normal.

Veterinarians advise pet owners to ask if their dog or cat is obese. Doing so can add a few years to your pets' lives, the ABC News story said.
