1 arrested in connection with elderly Novi woman's death

Victim not yet identified

NOVI, Mich. – Novi police have one person in custody in connection with the homicide of an 84-year-old woman.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was found Monday afternoon in her home in the Country Place condos -- which are near 8 Mile and Meadowbrook roads.

Police said a 46-year-old man who was staying with family at a nearby condo approached an officer and started asking questions.

Novi police chief David Molloy said the man's questions raised suspicions of officers on the scene.

"It became obvious he became very nervous and we brought him back here for an interview," Molloy said.

Police said it became obvious that the man knew details the homicide that only a suspect would know. He was arrested and taken in for questioning. His name is being withheld until formal charges are issued.

Novi police chief David Molloy was quick to praise the officer who engaged the suspect in conversation.

"I give him a lot of credit for the initiative he took," Molloy said.

Police said they searched the condo where the man was staying and found evidence that linked him to the homicide.

The 84-year-old victim was reportedly preparing to sell her condo and go to live with relatives.

Art Sinclair is a neighbor of the victim.  He said the condo community really is quiet and the murder comes as a major shock.

"You don't expect that kind of stuff to happen. I don't think anybody expects it to happen," Sinclair said.

An autopsy revealed the victim was stabbed to death.

The suspect is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
