1 killed, 1 injured in shooting on Detroit's west side

Second victim expected to survive, police say

DETROIT – A gunman opened fire Wednesday on Detroit's west side while children were playing outside.

The shooting near 7 Mile Road and Margareta Street left one man dead and another injured.

Police said a man with a gunshot wound walked into the emergency room Wednesday night at Sinai Grace Hospital. Doctors called police and detectives connected the dots that he was the second victim in the deadly shooting.

"I just closed my door because I saw all the kids outside playing," Angela Dixon said.

Seconds later, gunshots filled the air near Margareta Street and Grandville Avenue.

"I couldn't just believe that, when you see kids out and you go open fire like that," Dixon said.

Police said three men were talking on the block when at least one of them pulled out a gun and shot two people.

After getting her children to safety, Dixon looked across the street in disbelief.

"The guy's laying over there folded up," Dixon said.

Police found the man bleeding from several gunshot wounds he received at close range. They found a gun at the scene, but it doesn't appear to belong to the shooter.

Witnesses said they saw a man running down the street carrying a gun.

"It was really nerve-wracking because this is the first time anything like this has ever happened since I've been here for three years," a witness said.

Emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital, but the 26-year-old man died from his injuries.

"I didn't see them cover him up, or anything like that, so I was thinking he was OK," Dixon said. "It's very disheartening."

As police worked the scene, they learned about the second victim who showed up at the emergency room.

Residents in the neighborhood are shaken that the shooter didn't care about children being outside when he fired the weapon.

"There were children outside playing," Dixon said. "It was nice outside today. Children playing up and down the street, what kids do."

The second victim is expected to survive.

Police don't believe any of the three men involved in the shooting were from the neighborhood.
