13-year-old boy on dirt bike runs from Huron Township police

Chief: Boy didn't have a good reason for why he fled

HURON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The chase was captured on dash cam video from a Huron Township police cruiser during the early morning hours of July 25.

At King and Inkster roads the officer spotted two teens on dirt bikes on the road, which is against the law.

"At that point he tried to initiate a traffic stop on them. They had no headlights," said Huron Township Police Chief Everette Robbins.

The officer started to pursue the teens. One got away. A 13 year-old boy, who wasn't wearing a helmet, sped off into a nearby parking lot and then got back on the road. Then he crashed his bike.

The video shows that at that moment he realized it was time to give up. His ego was bruised and he was ready to suffer the consequences. His hands went up in the air.

"He had no injuries and he was turned over to his parents," said Robbins.

Police say it's not unusual for them to see youngsters on dirt bikes on the road. They often tell them to walk their bikes home. So why did the teens decide to increase their speed and get away when they were just facing a warning?

Police say the one who took this tumble didn't have a good reason.

"He really didn't have a good answer. We asked him why he ran and what was his purpose, and he really didn't have a good reason. I think it was just being 13 years old and not knowing what to do at that time in the morning," said Robbins.
