3 years later, family continues fight for answers in mother's death

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A husband lost his wife and five children lost their mother the night Sandra Loepp was killed in a hit-and-run in Washington Township in December of 2012.

The driver who left her to die in the road has never been found, but Loepp's family still hasn't given up.

Every July Loepp's family comes together for a reunion, but this is the third one Sandra has missed. Her family is still hoping for justice.

"She was always here, fixing this up, fixing that up, or 'this has to be over there,' and flowers have to be perfect," a family member said of Sandra.

When it came time for the annual family reunions, Sandra took charge. But without her around, reunions aren't the same at her parents' home in Casco Township.

"There's a hole in it, there's no doubt about it," said Sandra's father, Roger Crowe. "There's something missing. She was a spark plug and she got things going."

Back in December of 2012 in Washington Township, Sandra was walking home from Santino's bar in the early morning hours when a car hit her and dragger her a quarter of a mile. The driver dislodged her body from the car and took out without calling 9-1-1.

"I don't know how they can deal with themselves every day, just knowing what they did and not telling anybody about it," said Sandra's son Chandler Decker.

On Monday morning, Sandra's family tended to the cross that they put at the accident scene at Van Dyke Avenue and Campground Road.

For her five children, they have memories of their time with their mother and memories of the things she's missed the past two and a half years.

"You think about it a lot when you make your accomplishments," said her son Austin Decker. "'What if mom was here?' Or when you try hard for those accomplishments, you wish she was there to help you along the way, because you know she would've."

The family is hoping that keeping her name out there with Crime Stoppers posters will help someone eventually come forward with a tip to solve this cold case.

"People forget about the story, they move on," said Sandra's sister Kristy Bottle. "They're like 'it was a long time ago, you're never going to catch the person.' But they forget that there's still a family that doesn't have those answers."

Local 4's Will Jones talked to the Macomb County Sheriff's Department and authorities say the investigation is ongoing, but there are no new leads.
