$32.6 million Selfridge jet fuel storage, delivery system planned

Project will support rapid refueling of KC-135 Stratotanker

A KC-135 Stratotanker is refueled at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. A new $32.6 million fuels storage and delivery system to be built at the base will allow large aircraft, such as this KC-135, to "pull up to the pump" to receive jet fuel.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A new $32.6 million jet fuel storage and delivery system will be built at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in suburban Detroit.

The National Guard's 127th Wing announced Monday that the project will support rapid refueling of KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft and other aircraft that are based at Selfridge, training at the facility or deploying from the base.

Construction of the 630,000 gallon storage complex with an eight-station hydrant refueling system is expected to take about two years. The new system will replace an existing storage area at the base in Macomb County's Harrison Township that was constructed in 1958.

"This kind of infrastructure investment is exactly what we need to posture Selfridge to be a cutting-edge military facility for continued aircraft operations in the future," said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, commander, 127th Wing. "This project is a testament to the community and national support for Selfridge as a bedrock of enduring national defense and security for both our State and our Nation."

Fuel trucks will continue to be used for smaller aircraft.

Dan Frick, a mechanical engineer with the 127th Civil Engineer Squadron, said the project is the largest military construction contract, in dollar amount, ever awarded at Selfridge.
