4-year-old starts Ferndale house fire by lighting paper

Boy lit paper on fire so he could see in dark

FERNDALE, Mich. – A Ferndale mother says that her 4-year-old son started a fire in their home Saturday when he lit some paper on fire with a lighter.

The Ferndale fire marshal said the mother worked the midnight shift and went to sleep when she got home. The boy woke up and lit the paper on fire so he could see, according to authorities.

There were no smoke alarms upstairs, so the mother woke up to flames all around her. The marshal said the two are lucky to be alive.

Seven people live in the home, but they're not all related, according to authorities. Police say everyone from the home is okay and has a place to go.

The house was badly burned in the incident.
