64-year-old Detroit man shot, killed while sleeping on couch

DETROIT – Friends of 64-year-old Ronald Fair, of Detroit, found him dead on the floor of his home on Williams Street Sunday morning. He was sleeping on a couch below some windows, and only later did his friends discover that he died from a single gunshot, fired from the outside.

"I'm real shocked," said Stephanie Battle, the victim's friend.

Battle is stunned that her best friend has been shot and killed. Fair would have turned 65 this month.

His home on Williams Street is just west of I-96 and I-75. He slept on the couch, but was found dead on the floor.

His family and friends were devastated to learn that Fair was shot to death by a single bullet from outside the house. That shot penetrated the house's siding, the walls (see picture on right) and hit him while he was sleeping.

"He's a very nice guy," Battle said. "Only thing he did was stay in this house."

Fair's family believes the shot was random, calling it a drive by shooting.

Police are still investigating, but so far have no suspects in the case.
