71-year-old Detroit woman who beat attempted purse thief with cane speaks out

DETROIT – When a man tried to steal the purse of a 71-year-old woman in Detroit on Feb. 10, she fought back with her cane.

"I just turned around. I had this HurryCane and I just started whipping on him,” the victim said.

The cane brand was the HurryCane, appropriately named as she was a force of nature against the would-be purse snatcher.

Surveillance video showed the man attempting to grab her purse as she entered the Family Food Super Store in the 8600 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard on the city's west side.

He failed to get her purse, as she turned around and began hitting him with her cane.

She only had $10 in her purse, but that didn’t stop her from fighting back. She got the man with her cane and her knee, she said, and caused him to flee without her purse.

"I've been a fighter all my life,” she said. “This little punk is not going to get me down."

She called her cane a miracle cane and a lifesaver.

Detroit police are still searching for the man. He dropped his phone while he was being hit, and police now have it.
