81-year-old man carjacked, shot on Detroit's west side

DETROIT – Detectives from the Detroit Police Department are investigating an 81-year-old man who was carjacked and shot early Tuesday morning.

Police said Herman Garth was at a store in the 18500 block of Joy Road, near the Southfield Freeway, at 1:30 a.m. when he was shot and carjacked of his 2013 Chevy Cruze. He went in for a late-night pop.

The store clerk warned Garth that a few men were outside causing trouble.

Garth said the men took his keys but couldn't figure out how the key fob worked and became angry.

“He pushed me over to the other guy,” Garth said. “They started scuffling with me and the other guy had a gun and shot me. I went down to my knees, on both my knees, and I couldn’t get up.”

Garth was shot in both legs and several hundred dollars were taken from him.

He is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Police have not released a description of the suspected shooters yet.
