8-year-old in critical condition after being hit by car in Westland

38-year-old driver charged with OWI, reckless driving

WESTLAND, Mich. – Westland police say a woman who allegedly hit an 8-year-old boy Saturday on a neighborhood street may have been under the influence of narcotics.

The child was hit near Darwin Street and Delton Court. Initially, the driver took off, but witnesses were able to help police make an arrest a short time later.

The boy is in critical condition. He was declared brain dead on Monday.

Kimberly Garrett, 38, of Romulus, is charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, and operating while intoxicated second offense.

Garrett was arraigned Monday. Her bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety.
