Bus carrying youth football players crashes into tanker on I-75 in Monroe County

BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Seven people were hurt early Friday morning when a bus carrying youth football players hit a jack-knifed semi tanker on Interstate 75 in Monroe County.

The bus was part of a caravan of four for the Southfield Jayhawks traveling to Knoxville for a national tournament.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said the semi, which was carrying an empty tanker, swerved to hit a deer north of Sigler Road just after 4 a.m. and crashed into a guardrail.

The lead bus, driven by 57-year-old Kay Chatman, subsequently hit the semi.

Chatman, five passengers and the semi's driver were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

The interstate was closed down in both directions but reopened just before 7 a.m.

Berlin Township is located about 30 miles southwest of Detroit and about 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio.
