Detroit 300 starts issuing ID cards to members

DETROIT – The Detroit 300 citizen crime-fighting organization plans to issue photo identification to its more than 5,000 volunteers.

Organizers say Thursday that the cards will feature a color photo of the volunteer, expiration date, barcode and holograph to prevent duplication.

Detroit 300 vice president Angelo Henderson says the cards are meant to counter false membership claims. Henderson says some people wearing T-shirts and caps bearing "Detroit 300" logos are not members of the group and are making statements contrary to its mission.

The organization is made up of residents, civic groups and businesses. They patrol around schools and in Detroit neighborhoods, in addition to prompting the public to assist police investigating active cases.
