Lt. Nick Loussia said the couple's daughters, ages 8, 11 and 16, called 911 just before 10 p.m. saying they were trying to break up a fight between their parents in their home on Potomac Street. Loussia said the children told authorities their father had their mother in a headlock. Kenyatta Lockridge was found unresponsive by medics and pronounced dead.

"It was very traumatizing to the girls to have to witness their father strangling their mother, to have to call 911 and to have to physically intervene and pull him off their mother," Loussia said.

Melissa Williams is a neighbor who said she was shocked by the death. Her feelings to out to the daughters.

"We're almost sick to our stomach. To know these kids every day and to have them go through this is horrific for everyone," Williams said.

Williams was organizing a candlelight vigil at the Lockridge home Tuesday evening in support of the daughters.

"They've been through a horrific experience. It's going to change their life forever. This normal routine that was part of our routine, it was so normal and so scheduled, but it's over for them. They have a totally different life now and they just need to be supported," Williams said.

Police said the children have been turned over to a grandparent.
