LAKE ORION, Mich. – Animals were rescued from the Lake Orion Pet Centre, and the apartment units above were evacuated after a fire broke out Saturday morning.
The Orion Township Fire Department got the call at about 8 a.m. Fire officials said the fire appears to have started on the south side of the building.
All three apartment units above the center were evacuated. Officers entered the pet center under heavy smoke conditions and rescued three dogs and two cats from the fire.
“All the cats were rescued. All the people obviously made it out. No injuries,” Fire Chief Robert Smith said. “It’s going to be a long investigation.”
It is unclear how the fire started.
“Between fire, water and smoke, this building is going to be coming down,” Police Chief Gerry Narsh said. “It’s unfortunate because it’s a historic building.
The Lake Orion Pet Centre boards and grooms both dogs and cats. The rescued animals are being moved to another boarding facility in the area and the owners will be notified.
