DETROIT – A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting a Detroit Family Dollar worker in the stomach during an attempted robbery.
Police said Willie Roger Madison Jr walked into the store at 12603 Dexter Avenue on Oct. 20. Madison walked up to the cash register, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the register, police said.

The clerk took the drawer out of the register and put it on the counter, police said. Madison grabbed money from the drawer and ran toward the door, police said.
The clerk saw one of the Family Dollar workers, who is a legal concealed Pistol license holder, run toward the front door, telling Madison to stop, police said.
Police said Madison turned around and fired four or five shots at the worker, who also returned shots. During the shootout, the worker was struck in the stomach.
Madison dropped the money and lost one of his shoes in the store parking lot, police said. Investigators found blood-stained money and the shoe that Madison had dropped. The blood was tested at the Michigan State Police Biometrics and Identification Division, and the lab results showed the blood was a match for Madison.
The Family Dollar worker was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in critical condition and recovered from the gunshot wound after surgery.
Surveillance video showed Madison was injured during the robbery, which is how his blood got onto the money found in the parking lot, officials said.
Madison was previously found guilty of a felony related to a firearm charge, police said.
