Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – Garden City police made an arrest Wednesday evening in the fatal hit-and-run that occurred Monday night near Ford and Middlebelt roads.

Officers arrested a 39-year-old Westland man on Interstate 96 and Beech Daly Road around 7:15 p.m. after two days of surveillance.

The man was not driving the vehicle involved in the crash. Officers recovered the vehicle involved in the crash concealed in a garage on Prevost Street in Detroit.

George Punga, 52, was heading to the grocery store when he was stuck and killed. Investigators believe he was hit by two vehicles. All of the drivers left the scene.

The suspect was described by police as a "family man" with three children and an expectant wife. He has no prior criminal record and a valid driver's license.

The suspects name will not be released until his arraignment.

Police are continuing to investigate.
