Art Van Elslander mansion goes to auction

Most expensive listing in Michigan heads to auction Oct. 28

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. – Dust off the checkbook: The most expensive real estate listing in the state is heading to the auction block Oct. 28.

Furniture magnate Art Van Elslander is selling his 28,000-square-foot megamansion in Grosse Pointe Shores.

The home was listed at $15.9 million and has been on the market for a year.

Listing agent Jaime Rae Turnbull, from Higbie Maxon Agney, said there have been some bites on the home, but none the seller was interested in.

They've gone with Grand Estates Auction, which is known for its high price luxury real estate auctions.

"We witnessed an incredible success with a comparable property in Bay Harbor, which sold this summer, and they used Grand Estates Auction," Turnbull said.

The Bay Harbor home was listed at $13.9 million and sold for $11 million at auction. The Van Elslander property is being marketed internationally. It sits on Lake St. Clair and boasts every amenity possible, and enough marble and artisanal work on murals and woodworking to probably keep an army of craftsmen in constant employ.

Not surprisingly, not just anybody is going to be allowed in for the auction on Oct. 28. A $200,000 cashier's check and a quick look at a potential buyer's financial history is mandatory.
