DEARBORN, Mich. – Surveillance videos show a man using a hammer early Friday morning to try to break in to the Arab American News building in Dearborn.
Editor-In-Chief Osama Siblani told Local 4 nearly a dozen employees were in the building on Chase working on the next edition of the paper when they heard what they thought were gunshots at about 2:30 a.m.
Siblani said he told his employees to take cover.
A review of surveillance video shows the shots were actually a man trying to break the glass on a door with a hammer. Before they tried to break the glass, two men are seen canvassing cars in the parking lot, apparently looking for one that might have been unlocked.
"This is the first time we see this type of vandalism or attack. We don't know what happened, but apparently they were trying to steal," Siblani said.
No one was hurt and the only damage was to the glass door.
The building was occupied at the time by several newspaper personnel who were visible to the men while they attempted to break in.
"What is particularly disturbing about this crime is that brazen suspects made violent efforts to gain entry into the building which was clearly occupied by newspaper staff," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. "We have a dedicated team of detectives and forensic specialists that are diligently following up on every investigative lead. We will use all available resources to apprehend the suspects responsible for this crime as quickly as possible."
