BB gun vandal hits vehicles in Ann Arbor neighborhood

Neighbors wake up Monday morning to find car windows shot, shattered

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – People all over an Ann Arbor neighborhood woke up Memorial Day morning to more than a dozen cars with windows shot out by BB gun bandits.

Then, on Tuesday morning, some neighbors saw the bandits went out for round two.

Brent Shaffer had planned on doing some mulching and enjoying a little quality time with the family on Monday. Instead he spent the day cleaning up glass from three windows shot out on his Chevrolet Suburban and getting a tarp on it before it rained.

"They shot my windows like 12 times. It's true, it's BB guns, but it becomes a fairly violent act when you're doing something like that," he said.

Police say the person behind it got more than 30 cars total on or near Doty, Westwood and Arborview, usually between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. during the entire holiday weekend.

"It's heartbreaking and disappointing and it makes you feel pretty angry, actually, because you think your neighborhood is safer," said neighbor Jules Cobb.

Other neighbors have seen this type of hijinks before.

"The BB guns are newer pranks but in the past they've used baseball bats and whatever they have handy," said Peggy Moran.

"It's somebody who's not really understanding the impact of what they're doing," said Shaffer.

It may be a spring fling for whoever is behind it, but as neighbors say, you factor in deductibles and some insurance that doesn't cover it, and you're looking at damages in the thousands of dollars.

Ann Arbor police need your help on this. If you know who might be behind this you're being asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP. There could be a reward in this for good information.
