Bedrock buys Detroit building that will be Ally Financial's new headquarters

Dan Gilbert, auto-lending company announce plans for 'Ally Detroit Center'

DETROIT – Ally Financial Inc. is moving its headquarters into One Detroit Center, one of the city's most recognizable skyscrapers.

On Tuesday, Ally CEO Jeffrey Brown  announced the move jointly with Dan Gilbert -- whose Bedrock Real Estate Services just bought the building.

Under a 12-year lease, the building will be renamed Ally Detroit Center and house 1,500 Ally employees and contractors -- currently spread out at five southeast Michigan locations. Ally is formerly GMAC, General Motors' auto lending unit.

"When we started the aspiration on real state, this building, this facility, unfortunately wasn't even on our consideration list. But the Bedrock team, knowing the building would become available, moved quickly to work with Ally," Brown said. "I wanted to find a space with my teammates where they could all feel the energy of the business itself by being together, and also the energy of the community."

One Detroit Center stands at 619 feet and 45 stories, and is the tallest office building in the state.
