Abby and Deputy Matthews approaching a felony stop vehicle
DETROIT – Earlier this year, Local 4 introduced you a special member of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department: K-9 Officer Abby. She had been diagnosed with congenital heart and kidney disease in April.
Our story highlighted her incredible road to recovery, bouncing back when some vets said she wouldn't. Abby's partner and owner, deputy Jason Matthews, took Abby to see Dr. Budo of Cahill Veterinary Hospital in Flat Rock, who put her on a strict diet and several medications. Abby's health drastically improved, but despite the best efforts, Abby's kidneys began to fail.

Matthews said Abby's quality of life was gone and the decision was made to put her to rest. Matthews said he took Abby on Monday one last time to see everyone she loved at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, where she served as a bomb dog.
