HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A 54-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday night in a hit-and-run crash in Hazel Park.
The crash happened at about 11 p.m. on John R Road, north of Woodward Heights Boulevard. The man was struck by a dark-colored SUV while riding a bicycle across John R Road. He was taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nicole Gates lives in the area and witnessed the crash.
"I was shaking and I'm still shaking and have been since I heard he passed this morning," she said.
She was the person who called 911 after seeing the SUV hit the bicyclist. She said the SUV had the right of way.
She and other witnesses stayed with the victim until help arrived and lost sight of the SUV and the driver who continued north on John R Road.
The news has Patrick Sullivan, an owner of the Bicycle Doctors shop in Hazel Park on edge.
"The first thing that came to mind is I probably know the gentleman who was run over because most everyone in Hazel Park on a bike comes here at some point for some service," Sullivan said.
He believes the driver should have stopped.
"Shame on you for not stopping and helping the man. Karma. Karma comes back," he said.
Security cameras captured the moments leading up to the crash. Police are continuing to investigate
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Hazel Park Police Department at 248-542-6161.
