Building on verge of collapse due to massive fire in Southwest Detroit

Firefighters believe building might collapse

DETROIT – A commercial building is on the verge of collapse Monday in Southwest Detroit because of a massive fire.

The fire broke out in an abandoned building along Michigan Avenue near 35th Street, police said.

Michigan Avenue is completely shut down as firefighters battle the blaze. They said they're concerned the building could collapse.

Firefighters said the building is more than 100 years old and has been open to the elements for the last 25 years. They said it's not a sound structure.

There are other buildings that were built on top of the structure.

Firefighters said they moved their fire trucks away from the building. They're not going inside the building. They were on top battling the flames, but have since been pulled back down to ground level.

The fire chief said firefighters will likely be battling the flames most of the night.
