Confederate flag burned during art performance in Midtown Detroit

'Burn and burial funeral' sparks conversation about race

DETROIT – A "burn and burial funeral" was held Monday for the Confederate flag in Detroit.

Artist John C. Sims worked with writers, dancers, activists and elected officials to put together the ceremony.

The event happened on the Detroit '67 50th anniversary.

"The festivities are part of the 16-year multi-media 'recoloration proclamation' project exploring the complexity of identity, cultural appropriation and visual terrorism in the context of Confederate iconography and African-American culture," the organizers said.

The event was held at 7 p.m. Monday at the N'Namdi Gallery in Detroit.
